There was a time where we feared what would happen to our coral reefs as ocean chemistry changed and temperatures rose due to global warming. Not only this but our reefs were being damaged due to human destruction such as boating, fishing practices, anchors, quarrying and more. Corals were also being illegally interacted with, harvested for the aquarium trade or for jewelry, which would lead to over-harvesting or destruction of the species which would reduce bio-diversity. Another big thing that is not known is that parasites can also hitch a ride on corals, the very same ones that cause fish deaths. There are also parasites and creatures that can destroy corals in the home aquarium.
